Itinerary:
Day 1, Tuesday: Copenhagen-Kangerlussuaq (Inland Icecap) L, D:
From Denmark (Copenhagen) you fly to Kangerlussuaq (Greenland) at 09.15 and arrival at 09.45 (4,5 hours flying) . We meet at Polar Lodge in Kangerlussuaq around noon and the guide will go through the equipment and prepare you for this exciting experience. We drive in our 4WD vehicle to Point 660 c. 37 km east of town. Point 660 is our starting point for the Ice Cap ‘mini-expedition’. We put on the back pack and head out on the ice. If it’s slippery we wear crampons and use our hiking poles, but usually we don’t need this equipment. Heading off in an easterly direction gives us c. 2 hours of hiking, while we begin to understand what fascinated explorers to cross the Ice Cap. After we have arrived and moved into our tents, we will treat ourselves with coffee, tea and something sweet. There will be a "toilet tent" with basic facilities. If the weather permits, we will do a smaller evening hike and enjoy the adventure that unfolds around us. Do notforget your camera; the Ice Cap combined with the light from the midnight sun make breath taking sceneries!
Late evening we will prepare our "Travel Lunch" dinner, a surprisingly good freeze dried pre-made meal, where you only add hot water. According to Greenlandic tradition we gather in our large mess tent and share anecdotes. After many impressions, we deserve a good nights sleep in our comfortable & warm sleeping bags.
Day 2, Wednesday: Ice Cap – Kangerlussuaq. B, L:
A new and exciting day on the Ice Cap awaits us. After breakfast in the mess tent it is time to venture out and explore the ice sculptured landscape. Our hike today will – depending on weather - take us towards the Russell Glacier. On our way across the ice fields we will see the many clear melt water streams that are created each year on the Inland Ice during summer. As we get closer to the Russell Glacier we will be able to get an impression of the huge crevasses’ (at a safe distance) that eventually creates the calving glacier. We will bring our crampons and hiking poles, we do not use rope, since we stay on safe terrain during the entire hike.
Lunch is enjoyed on the hike or in camp depending on weather conditions. In the afternoon we pack up our camp and head back to the mountainside, where our vehicle waits for us. We are back in Kangerlussuaq early in the evening.
Accommodation at Polar Lodge.
Day 3, Thursday: Kangerlussuaq-Ilulissat (City Sight Seeing by foot). B:
After breakfast you will be flying to Ilulissat. The flighttime is estimated to be 45 minutes and you will see how the landscape changes during the flight. Minutes before landing in Ilulissat you will see big icebergs spread in the ocean south of the city. In Ilulissat you will be accomodated at the 3-star Hotel Hvide Falk and when you are settled, we have arranged a walk in Ilulissat. Our local guide will take you on a historical city walk, where you will get a good introduction of a town in Greenland, the different harbours, the church and ofcourse the museum.
Day 4, Friday: Ilulissat (Walk to Sermermiut and Boattrip to the Icefiord) B:
After breakfast at the hotel it is time for one of the beautiful walks in the world – the walk /hike to the valley of Sermermiut. The walk will take 2-3 hours in all. The valley has been a settlement some 2.500 years ago and there are still ruins to see from that time. At the end of this valley you will see Kangia Icefiord, where you can see the 100 meter high Icebergs in a pack. The place is a World Heritage Site and is amazing, peaceful and powerful.
In the evening it is time for a boattrip to the Icefiord with big Icebergs, the ones you saw in the morning. Enjoy a cruise between the giants and the guide will tell about how they end up in Ilulissat Icefiord, why they are white, blue, transparent or even green.
Day 5, Saturday: Eqi (the calving glacier) B, L, D:
Very few places in Greenland are as beautiful as the Eqi glacier, which comes out in a fiord about 80 km north of Ilulissat. It is by boat possible to go very close to the edge of the glacier and see big pieces of ice break off. The crashes are enormous and the sight of the icebergs falling into the water is impressive. In Eqi you will accommodated in one of the huts – all faced toward the glacier. Enjoy the silence and yet again the noice from the glacier – sounds like thunder.
Day 6, Sunday: Eqi-Ilulissat, B, L:
The morning is free at leisure. Some take a small hike in the area and some just enjoy the view and stay in the camp. The breakfast and lunch is served at the “Café Victor”.
Early afternoon with boat back to Ilulissat.
