Itinerary:


Day 1, Tuesday: Copenhagen-Kangerlussuaq (Inland Icecap) / L
From Denmark (Copenhagen) you fly to Kangerlussuaq (Greenland) at 09.15 and arrival at 09.45 (4,5 hours flying) . In Kangerlussuaq you will be accomodated at Polar Lodge, the newest hotel in Kangerlussuaq. Kangerlussuaq was an American Military Base until 1992. What is left now, is the buildnings, that proove the former presence of the American soldiers. There is a great history about their stay and has ment alot for Greenland. Today Kangerlussuaq is known for the area – the nature and the many animals nearby the airport. After settling at Polar Lodge you will get to see the great nature – on a Jeep toward the Inland Icecap.On your way you might get lucky and see the Musk Oxen and the Reindeers. The Inland Icecap is 3 km. thick in the summit and on the edges you will experince how rough and beautiful the Icecap is.

Day 2, Wednesday: Kangerlussuaq on your own / B:
Breakfast at Polar Lodge. The day is on your own. There are several excursions to choose between as well as good hiking paths, if you want to go on our own.Nearby Kangerlussuaq there is a small bay called “Fossil Sletten”. Here you can find fossils of animals from the sea.

The Museum of Kangerlussuaq is showing the great American History of Kangerlussuaq and is deffinately a visit worth.

Day 3, Thursday: Kangerlussuaq-Ilulissat (City Sight Seeing by foot) / B:After breakfast you will be flying to Ilulissat. The flighttime is estimated to be 45 minutes and you will see how the landscape changes during the flight. Minutes before landing in Ilulissat you will see big icebergs spread in the ocean south of the city. In Ilulissat you will be accomodated at the 3-star Hotel Hvide Falk and when you are settled, we have arranged a walk in Ilulissat. Our local guide will take you on a historical city walk, where you will get a good introduction of a town in Greenland, the different harbours, the church and ofcourse the museum.

You will be sailing very early next day. Good idea to buy something for the salingtrip

Day 4, Friday: Ilulissat-Qeqertarsuaq (By boat through the DiskoBay) / B:
Very early breakfast. Transfer to the harbor. You can leave your main-luggage at Hotel Hvide Falk – make an appointment with the reception.
At 07.00 in the morning the boat departs Ilulissat harbor. On the way, you will pass the giants of Icebergs again – you will never get enough of that sight. The DiskoBay area is also home for Humpback Whales. Playing and breathing from the surface and not at all shy. At 11.30 the boat will arrive Qeqertarsuaq, which means ”the big Island”. You will be picked up by a bus and driven to you hotel. After accommodation, you can enjoy the area and the stunning view.

Day 5, Saturday: Qeqertarsuaq, (The Lyngmark Glacier - dogsledding) / B, L, D:
Qeqertarsuaq is the only place who can offer dog sledding in the summer. Feel the whistling from 15 sledge dogs running across the glacier at the top of the mountain. Experience the driver's commands to his dogs while you are sitting at the sledge behind enjoying the creaking of the snow and the beautiful surroundings.
The sledge tour takes place at the Lyngmark Glacier, which is in an altitude of 8-900 meters. Our service cabins are also located here, so food and refreshments can be served, and it is also possible to stay for the night.
To get to the glacier you have to climb the mountain, which takes 2½ - 4 hours depending on your physical condition and temper. The track is varied and some places very steap, for which reason the trip is not recommended for diabetics, people with heart deiseases or hip and leg infirmities.
The summer temperature is typically 10 - 15 degrees Celsius on the glacier and you will stay in huts – please do not expect any hotel standard. Full board during stay on the glacier

Day 6, Sunday: Qeqertarsuaq (On the glacier and on your own in the town). Evening back to Ilulissat / B:
After breakfast on the glacier and the great view to the Disko Bay, we will walk down to Qeqertarsuaq. In Qeqertarsuaq you have the rest of the day on your own. Most people use the day to relax and rest the legs.
The boat will depart at 18.30.
You will arrive in Ilulissat close to midnight. Again accommodation at Hotel Hvide Falk.

Day 7, Sunday: Ilulissat (Day free at leisure) / B:
One of the only days free at leisure. Either you can relax or go on a helicoptertrip to Kangia Glacier or walk around in Ilulissat and experience the everyday life in Greenland.

Day 8, Tuesday: Ilulissat (Walk to Sermermiut and Boattrip to the Icefiord) / B:
After breakfast at the hotel it is time for one of the beautiful walks in the world – the walk /hike to the valley of Sermermiut. The walk will take 2-3 hours in all. The valley has been a settlement some 2.500 years ago and there are still ruins to see from that time. At the end of this valley you will see Kangia Icefiord, where you can see the 100 meter high Icebergs in a pack. The place is a World Heritage Site and is amazing, peaceful and powerful.

In the evening it is time for a boattrip to the Icefiord with big Icebergs, the ones you saw in the morning. Enjoy a cruise between the giants and the guide will tell about how they end up in Ilulissat Icefiord, why they are white, blue, transparent or even green.

Day 9, Wednesday: Ilimanaq (Boattrip to a settlement) / B, L:
Ilimanaq is a settlement in the Municipality of Qasigiannguit south of Ilulissat. The population is approx 80 inhabitants. The settlement was founded around 1741. The community main occupations are still hunting and fishing.
Boat tour to Ilimanaq
The boat tour to Ilimanaq is an opportunity to visit an old and almost untouched inuit settlement and, at the same time, sail among the massive icebergs that lay at the mouth of the Ilulissat icefjord.
The boat leaves Ilulissat harbour at 10 am with direction Ilimanaq. Before reaching the village the boat will cross the famous Ilulissat icefjord with it´s massive icebergs. In Ilimanaq you will have a couple of hours where you can visit the village in particular the little church that was built in 1904. Lunch will be searved at a local family’s home, where you get to taste a typical Greenlandic meal.

Day 10, Thursday: Eqi (the calving glacier) / B, L, D:
Very few places in Greenland are as beautiful as the Eqi glacier, which comes out in a fiord about 80 km north of Ilulissat. It is by boat possible to go very close to the edge of the glacier and see big pieces of ice break off. The crashes are enormous and the sight of the icebergs falling into the water is impressive. In Eqi you will accommodated in one of the huts – all faced toward the glacier. Enjoy the silence and yet again the noice from the glacier – sounds like thunder.

Day 11, Friday: Eqi – free at leisure / B, L, D:
Actually it is enough for most people just to stay at the camp at enjoy the beautiful site and nature. But there are several excurtsions you can choose this day:

Hike to the lagoon, the moraine and the glacier:
From the huts we hike around the small lagoon at the southern end of the glacier. There are often large flocks of geese in the lagoon in the breeding season. The trip goes further up the moraine where we can look down into the enormous cracks in the glacier few meters away from us. From here we will also get an overview of a large part of the 70m high glacier-front and we will see the impressive calvings from the glacier.

2 days hike on th Ice Cap – on the track of the French POUL- EMILE VICTOR:
If you want a longer hike on the ice cap and a spectacular view of the glacier supplying the delta west of Ice Camp Eqi with enormous amount of melting water, you should choose this trip. We camp at a beautiful spot about 2 km from the edge of the ice. The hike on the ice cap is about 10 km and we reach what we call the big Moulin area (wells in the Icecap) where you really can sense the dynamics and the power of the ice.
Level: Hard (you will hike steep up for about 2 hours in the beginning)

Day 12, Saturday: Eqi-Ilulissat / B, L:
Morning free at Eqi area. Early afternoon the boat will leave Eqi and estimated to arrive Ilulissat around 1900

Day 13, Sunday: Ilulissat – free at leisure / B:
Very last full day in Ilulissat. Some of our guests go to church and hope for a Greenlandic wedding or baptism,, so they can see the colorful costume.

Day 14, Monday: Ilulissat – Kangerlussuaq – Copenhagen. B, L:
Breakfast at the hotel. Transfer to the airport to take the flight to Kangerlussuaq. From Kangerlussuaq at 11.25 and arrival 19.45.

Accommodation


Kangerlussuaq:
Polar Lodge was completely refurbished in the Summer of 2006 and has the most modern facilities in Kangerlussuaq.
The lodge is situated less than 100 meters from the airport with shopping facilities close by. Right behind Polar Lodge, the sheer Mount Hassel rises and forms a breathtaking backdrop. 13 double rooms and 3 single rooms. All simply furnished. No private bathrooms or toilets.


Ilulissat:
A modern 3 star hotel - based in Ilulissat. The hotel i situated at the waterfront of the world famous Icefiord with an impressive view over the Disko Bay.

The hotel has 40 international standard rooms, including non-smoking rooms, and a separate annex with 4 rooms and 9 hotelapartments.
Each room is beautifully furnished and has a telephone, television and wireless internet access as standard equipment.


Qeqertarsuaq:
Hotel Disko is placed in the middle of the town in 4 different buildings near each other. One of them is the old residence of the colony manager.
The hotel has 15 standard rooms with private bath/toilet and 7 rooms with common bath/toilet.
Breakfast is included and will be served at the neighbouring restaurant.


Lyngmark-glacier:
Lyngmark Tours has two cabins at the Lyngmark Glacier in the height of 800 meter above Qeqertarsuaq. Only in summer it is possible to walk to the huts from town in 2½ -4 hours. In winter time the trip will be done at a snowmobile at the back of the mountain.


Eqi Camp – north of Ilulissat:
Situated north of Ilulissat. Very isolated and very beautifully situated camp. 11 huts – all with the great view to the calving glacier.
No running water or electricity. Toilets are in every hut. There are 2-4 beds in every hut, linen and towels for every person. During stay at Eqi Camp, you will get breakfast, lunch and dinner – all served in “Café Victor”, named after the French Poul-Emile Victor
